Building a Callus Mind

Hey Jim,

I’ve been listening to a lot of podcasts with David Goggins and one of his biggest insights is about building a callus mind.

In order to grow as a person, we need to do things that fortify our minds.

He calls it building a callus mind.

The only way to do build a callus mind is to do things that scare us.

This means we have to put ourselves in situations that are uncomfortable.

Things that can be painful.

Things that make us want to quit.

Things that we hate.

In a nutshell, we have to suffer.

Once you suffer and you build a callus mind you are ready for anything that life throws at you.

One example he gave in a podcast was about being ready for the call.

A call that comes late at night saying that his mother died.

He knows that he will be ready and won’t fall apart because he’s developed a callus mind.

We are much stronger than we think.

Our ability to suffer and withstand things are incredible.

For millennia, human beings were used to suffering.

Death was a common occurrence in society.

Graveyards were prominent in city centers.

Infant mortalities was common.

Now, we live in opulence and abundance.

I am not saying we still don’t suffer.

There is still plenty of misery around us.

But for many of us, especially in this country, we live comfortable stress-free lives.

Have you done something lately that has made you suffer?
